Jims Rustic Craft

Making

Offcuts, then a finish, then one piece.

The wood is recycled. Pine turns up most often. Oak, ash and walnut turn up when they turn up. Jim does not stain a piece to pretend it is a different tree unless that is the finish he has chosen, and he will say which.

Some pieces are left in the colour of the wood and waxed. Some are stained, like the light oak picnic table. Some are burned, the shou sugi ban way, and waxed so the char stays glossy and the grain still shows. Felt is set into slots and trays where a phone or a ring should not slide.

Hardware is simple: a wire on the cheese boards, a black latch on the boxes, metal rings on the long tray. Nothing is plated to look expensive. It is there to work.

When the piece in the photographs is sold, that piece is gone. Another can be discussed. It will not be a copy.
